It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Derek Watts today. Derek was always so passionate about helping highlight the need to pass our DNA laws in South Africa. We first traveled to Birmingham together in 2007 where we filmed in the UK's FSS labs, exploring how the UK and other countries were tackling crime through the use of DNA Database at that time. Since then, Derek always followed the progress of our lobbying efforts, celebrated with us when the DNA laws were eventaully passed and subsequently helped to raise the issue of the DNA backlog crisis in South Africa. Thank you Derek for helping effect real change in South Africa. Amidst all the important causes you championed, thank you for your contributions in this space. Rest in peace, Derek. We will miss this gentle giant. Vanessa Lynch
