There are two main standards that apply to forensic activities: ISO 17025:2017, which focuses on Testing and Calibration Laboratories, and ISO 17020:2012, which focuses on Inspection Bodies. Although this is well known, the process to achieve laboratory accreditation is complex. However, once accredited, a laboratory can confidently exchange information with other ISO-accredited laboratories internationally, knowing that its results are supported by validated methods, calibrated equipment, traceable measuring instruments, adequate facilities, and qualified personnel. Currently, there are more than 700 accredited forensic laboratories worldwide, and Africa is the next continent to adopt a culture of quality in its forensic laboratories.
