Libya flood disaster & the potential of DNA

Another tragedy struck a fellow African country as a tsunami-sized flash flood broke through Derna, a coastal city in Libya, killing thousands and displacing over 43,000 people. The fragility of the state worsens the gravity of the situation, and neighbouring countries have offered assistance, including the provision of forensic medicine and DNA and fingerprint identification. Disasters such as this are a reminder of the value of DNA and forensics to help identify missing and unidentified individuals, bringing closure to families who have lost a loved one.

Members of the Emirati Rescue Team assist in relief work in Libya's eastern city of Derna on September 16, 2023 in the aftermath of flash flooding. A week after a wall of water rushed through the Libyan city of Derna, sweeping thousands to their deaths, the focus turned to caring for survivors of the disaster.
