"In a country were crime is on a rampage ranging from terrorism,
banditry, political thuggery, rape to impunity, this presentation
seeks to enlighten and highlight the importance and need of
using DNA Forensics in curbing complex criminal cases."
Meet Odobi Grace Irima, a passionate forensic analyst from Nigeria, who recently presented on how DNA can play a crucial role in identifying remains, solving crimes, and enhancing national security in Nigeria. Odobi's presentation highlighted how the advent of forensic genetics has revolutionised the field of criminal investigation, providing a powerful tool for solving complex criminal cases. Her presentation explored the critical role of DNA in forensic investigation, its application, and its implications for national security. She recommended that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in collaboration with National Security Agencies, focus on enhancing the Defence Identification Centre (DIC) in Nigeria by investing in and developing in forensic capacity building.
Odobi also noted that Nigeria's criminal justice system often falters due to a lack of forensic evidence and reommended that the Nigerian military should act as a “Change Agent,” leading efforts to integrate forensic solutions into a comprehensive government strategy to address complex security challenges, curb crime, and protect citizens. By doing so, Odobi believes DNA forensics can bridge this gap, providing a state-of-the-art tool for enhancing justice and national security.
Kudos to Odobi for bringing this important issue to light.
