The Female Forensic Lead
Dr Yahia Hakima
The #MVFJ2024 Annual Award has been awarded to Dr. Yahia Hakima, Morocco’s first female head of the National Forensic Science Laboratory. Dr. Hakima’s career began with degrees in biology and genetics, and her journey through the ranks of the Directorate General of National Security is a testament to her skill, resilience, and dedication.
Her leadership at the National Forensic Science Laboratory has led to significant advancements in forensic DNA applications, making her an invaluable asset in the fight for justice and accountability. Her impact is clear, reflected by the overwhelming number of votes she received, along with the heartfelt positive comments shared by her colleagues and peers. Dr. Hakima’s efforts have paved the way for future generations of women in forensic science across Africa. In a message of congratulations, the award committee recognized Dr. Hakima for her dedication to the development and application of forensic science, specifically her instrumental role in advancing forensic DNA technology within the region.

A Special Shout-Out to Brigadier Joe Smith
While Dr. Hakima was the well-deserved winner of the #MVFJ2024 Annual Award, a special mention goes to Brigadier Joe Smith, who was a close runner-up and received a significant number of votes. Brigadier Smith’s extensive career in forensic science, spanning 38 years, has driven positive change, not just in his home country but throughout the African continent. A key achievement of his work has been overseeing South Africa’s DNA database, which has led to the identification of hundreds of perpetrators and brought justice to countless victims. His commitment to the forensic field has made him a highly respected figure among his colleagues.

Prof. Bruce Budowle
Dr. Budowle has been nominated for his tireless work in building forensic capacity across the continent. Despite not being from Africa, he has actively trained and supported countries and scientists, freely sharing his time and invaluable knowledge to empower others. His distinguished career includes significant contributions to counter-terrorism, victim identification from mass disasters, and advancements in microbial forensics and bioterrorism. As chair of the Scientific Working Group on Microbial Genetics and Forensics, he has established quality assurance guidelines and developed criteria for biological databases. He has actively trained and supported countries and scientists in Africa, freely sharing his expertise to empower others. With approximately 600 published articles, over 720 presentations, and more than 250 testimonies in criminal cases, Dr. Budowle has made a profound impact in molecular biology, population genetics, and forensic biology, exemplifying excellence in his work.

Dr Denis Mukwege
A world-renowned gynecologist, human rights activist, and Nobel Peace laureate from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Mukwege is a leading specialist in the treatment of wartime sexual violence. His groundbreaking work at the Panzi Hospital has provided care for thousands of survivors, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to healing and empowerment. As a vocal campaigner against the use of rape as a weapon of war, Dr. Mukwege has brought international attention to this urgent issue, advocating for justice and systemic change. His exceptional dedication to humanitarian efforts and his relentless fight for women's rights made him a deserving candidate for this prestigious award.
