OUR 2021 RECOGNISED CHANGEMAKERS
While all these voices for change have done exceptional work,
the winner for 2021 is Mbali Shongwe and a donation was made to her NPO in gratitude for her contribution.
Mbali Shongwe
Mbali is a change advocate who has spoken out about her experience of having DNA collected following a sexual assault and highlighted how DNA backlogs delay justice.
As a means of coming to terms with her sexual assault and the challenges she encountered reporting it, Mbali founded a youth-based mental health NPO Mindful(I) Organisation, and we are grateful to her for starting the #Letstalkbacklog movement, which has been instructive in changing other survivor’s experiences.
Watch her interview here and follow Mbali to support this young and brave leader's journey.
Redi Tlhabi
Redi Tlhabi is an award-winning journalist, author, producer and presenter, with justice in her DNA.
Gifted in the way she leads, inspires and guides her listeners towards social activism and responsibility. We are grateful for her passion and contribution to the betterment of our society, and for calling on the South African government to act on the DNA backlog crisis and to pass the Convicted Offender Bill.

Action Society
Action Society is a civil rights organisation driven by a purpose to provide a voice to the voiceless.
Action Society launched a Justice Fund to assist in their efforts to urge Cyril Ramaphosa to sign the Convicted Offenders Bill (CO Bill), which resulted in Cabinet approval in November 2021. Their continued efforts to see the CO Bill passed in 2022 is critical to this campaign.
We are grateful to Action Society for their active advocacy for a reformed justice system, and for holding government accountable to protect South African citizens.

Angels' Care
The incredible work of Angels' Care focuses on assisting children in informal settlements through the provision of pre-school education, aftercare facilities, a feeding scheme and heath care programmes, including a crisis centre for children who are victims of gender based violence.
Their efforts to improve the use of forensic DNA to help police identify perpetrators of violence against children is leading the way in South Africa.
We are grateful for Angels' Care for creating an environment of justice and healing where hope thrives.
